What is Star Anise?
Star Anise (Illicium verum) is the dried star-shaped seed pod of a small tropical evergreen tree native to Vietnam and China. In Hindi, it’s Chakra Phool (चक्र फूल — “wheel flower”); in Malayalam, Thakolam; in Tamil, Anasphalai. The signature licorice-sweet aroma comes from anethole, the same compound in fennel and anise seeds — but star anise is 2-3 times more intense.
Star Anise vs regular Anise seeds
- Star anise (Illicium verum): big star-shaped woody pods · strong licorice flavour · Chinese/Mughlai cooking
- Anise seeds (Pimpinella anisum): small brown seeds · milder flavour · European bakery, liqueurs
Not interchangeable in precise recipes. Star anise is far more potent — half a star does what a teaspoon of anise seeds would.
Where it’s essential
- Chinese 5-spice powder (one of the five)
- Vietnamese pho — the broth’s signature aroma
- Mughlai biryani, nihari, Hyderabadi dum
- Garam masala — a classical Indian ingredient
- Christmas mulled wine, cider, mulled drinks
- Pork belly and slow-braised meat dishes
- Pickling spice, chai masala
How to use
Add 1 whole star (or 2-3 points broken off) to a dish serving 4-6. Add early in cooking (in the hot oil tempering or at the start of a slow braise) so the flavour has time to infuse. Star anise is strong — more than 1 whole star can overpower a curry. Remove before serving if preferred.
Health benefits
Star anise is rich in anethole, shikimic acid (the compound used to make the flu drug Tamiflu), and antioxidants. Traditionally used to:
- Aid digestion
- Freshen breath (classical post-meal chew in small quantities)
- Support respiratory health
- Warm the body in cold weather (classical winter spice)

Frequently asked questions
What is star anise called in Hindi and Malayalam?
Hindi: Chakra Phool (चक्र फूल). Malayalam: Thakolam. Tamil: Anasphalai.
Is star anise the same as anise seeds?
No — different plants, related flavour. Star anise is bigger, stronger, and used in Chinese/Mughlai cooking. Anise seeds are smaller and milder, used in European bakery. Not interchangeable without adjusting quantities.
How many star anise in biryani?
For biryani serving 4-6: 1 whole star in the ghee at the start of tempering. Remove before serving or leave in (guests push it aside).
Is star anise safe to eat?
Yes — Chinese star anise (Illicium verum) is safe for culinary use. Avoid Japanese star anise (I. anisatum) which looks similar but is toxic. Our product is the safe culinary Chinese variety.
Can I chew star anise after meals?
Traditionally yes — breaking off a single point of a star for a mild digestive chew. Much more intense than fennel, so a small amount is enough.
How long does star anise last?
Whole pods keep aroma for 18-24 months in an airtight container. Ground star anise loses aroma within 3 months.
Can I use star anise instead of fennel?
In an emergency, yes — but use 1/4 the quantity. Star anise is much more intense. Flavour will be similar but stronger.
