Premium Star Anise (Chakra Phool / Badian) — intact stars, full aroma
Star anise (Illicium verum) is the dried fruit of a small evergreen tree native to southern China and Vietnam. The star-shaped fruit opens into 8 (sometimes 6) seed-pods arranged like petals — giving the spice its name and its characteristic cross-section. Though similar in flavour to anise seed, star anise is botanically unrelated and chemically distinct — it contains shikimic acid (the compound from which Tamiflu is synthesized) and gives Chinese and South Asian cuisine its signature sweet-warm liquorice background note.
Why whole-star quality matters
Broken star anise is cheaper for a reason — once the pods break open, the seeds inside lose aromatic oil rapidly. Whole intact stars protect the seeds from air and light, preserving the sweet liquorice aroma for 2+ years. Our premium pack contains predominantly whole stars with minimal breakage.
Culinary uses
Biryani: 2 whole stars per 1kg rice, in oil during tempering.
Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup): 3-4 stars simmered in beef broth for 2 hours.
Chinese 5-spice: 1 part ground star anise + cloves + cinnamon + fennel + Sichuan pepper.
Mulled wine / mulled cider: 2 stars per litre, with cinnamon, cloves, orange peel.
Marinades for duck, pork, lamb: gives the characteristic Asian sweet-warm note.
Traditional uses
Ayurveda and TCM use star anise as a digestive, breath freshener, and mild respiratory support. Post-meal chewing of a single pod point is a traditional practice in some regions.
Storage
Airtight glass jar away from light: 2+ years aroma retention. Avoid breaking stars until needed — each broken star loses aroma faster.
FAQ
Is star anise the same as anise seed? No — different plants. Flavour is similar (anethole compound), but star anise is larger, sweeter, and used whole; anise seed is a small seed used ground.
How many stars in 50g? 50-60 whole stars, depending on size.
Is star anise safe for babies? The Chinese variety (Illicium verum) is safe in culinary amounts. Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum) is TOXIC and must be avoided. We supply only the Chinese food-grade variety.
Do I eat the whole star? No — star anise flavours the dish but is too tough to chew. Remove before serving.
Can I grind star anise? Yes, for masala blends. Break into pieces, grind in a spice mill. Use within 3 months.
